A single crack is straightforward to clone out manually, but most cracked photographs have a fine network of interconnected cracks running across the entire surface — sometimes thousands of them. This is what conservators call "crazing", and it appears when the emulsion layer dries out and contracts faster than the paper base beneath it.
Our AI detects the entire crack network at once, distinguishes it from real image content (hair, fabric, lines, edges), and reconstructs the underlying surface in a single pass. The result is a smooth, intact photograph with no visible repair seams — even on photographs where cracks completely cover the original.
Preserving skin texture under heavy cracking
The trick on cracked portraits is removing the crack network without flattening skin into plastic. Our restoration model treats faces with a separate sub-pass that preserves micro-texture while still cleaning the crack overlay. Conservative Restoration is the gentlest option; Comprehensive Restoration gives the cleanest final surface.
